The ENCODE consortium d...Thanks for the comment.

The ENCODE consortium did a horrible job of summarizing the results. The media made no effort to do their job of being skeptical about the results.

I would like to know, has the reception of ENCODE's results been worse than other science press releases? I don't feel like I have been in enough of them yet to say either way.

Max, I'm sure you must have an opinion of how much of our DNA is junk. What do you think?

I think I'll make this the subject of my next post. In the meantime, the short answer is that personally I have never had a problem with the definition of function based on evolutionary conservation. With some extrapolation regarding selection too weak or too recent to detect; that gives 5-15%. Thanks for posting you...Welcome to the blogosphere! Thanks for posting your thoughts.

I have a comment. You say ...

Whether the consortium could have done a better job explaining the results, and whether we should expect the media to more accurately represent scientific results, is hard to say.

I don't think it's hard to say at all. The ENCODE consortium did a horrible job of summarizing the results. The media made no effort to do their job of being skeptical about the results.

Max, I'm sure you must have an opinion of how much of our DNA is junk. What do you think?

A related question ... how much of our genome do you think is devoted to regulating the expression of the 25,000 known genes? I think it averages about 1kb per gene. What do you think?
